Introduction to Andalusite, Kyanite, and Sillimanite:

• Andalusite, Kyanite, and Sillimanite are structural polymorphs of Al2SiO5, all belonging to the sillimanite group of minerals.
• India is a dominant supplier of high-quality sillimanite globally.

1. Thermal Characteristics:
   Kyanite:
   • Decomposition begins at 1100°C.
   • Complete decomposition occurs at 1410°C.
   • The peak on the thermal curve is at 1420°C.
   Andalusite:
   • Decomposition begins at 1410°C.
   • Complete decomposition occurs at 1500°C.
   • The peak on the thermal curve is at 1510°C.
   Sillimanite:
   • Decomposition begins at 1550°C.
   • Complete decomposition occurs at 1625°C.
   • The peak on the thermal curve is at 1560°C.
2. Use in Refractories:
   • Sillimanite is also known as naturally occurring mullite.
   • Mullite consists of interlocking needle-shaped crystals, providing excellent creep resistance and stability at 1800°C.
   • It is used in refractories for applications such as blast furnaces, copper roasting, glass furnaces, gunning mixes, plastic refractories, kiln furniture, cement kilns, combustion chambers, ladles, and nozzles.
   • Sillimanite in refractories provides high-temperature stability and loading capacity.
3. Use in Ceramics:
   • Sillimanite, Andalusite, or Kyanite serve as sources of alumina and silica in ceramics manufacturing.
   • They are used in the production of ceramics such as sanitaryware, cookware, dinnerware, ceramic tiles, and electric porcelain.
   • Mullite, derived from sillimanite, helps counterbalance shrinkage caused by clays during ceramics manufacturing.
4. Use in Metallurgy:
   • Sillimanite minerals are used as high-temperature sand for forming casting molds in metallurgy.
   • Sillimanite, in powder form, is employed in the manufacturing of foundry paints and mold sprays to aid in the removal of metal castings from molds.
   • Additionally, sillimanite is used in kiln lining and kiln furniture to reduce thermal cracking during the manufacturing process by forming mullite during firing.
